Crary WeedRoller

Boat World in Minnesota sells the Crary WeedRoller, a dock-mounted system designed to help control lake weeds without chemicals.

WeedRollers move slowly along the lake bottom. As the rollers rotate, they agitate the lake bed and help prevent weeds from taking root.

With routine use, weeds are disrupted before they become a thick mat—helping create a cleaner, more comfortable swimming area near your dock.

If your weekends are getting tangled up in weeds, the WeedRoller is a practical, environmentally friendly option. You avoid hazardous chemicals, and you skip the back-breaking work (and mess) of raking and hauling wet weeds onto the shore.

Unlike one-time weed removal, the WeedRoller continues to patrol the bottom and reduce re-growth over time.

How does it work?

The WeedRoller moves in a slow, broad arc—pivoting more than 270 degrees. As the linked rollers rotate along the lake bottom, they detach existing weeds and agitate the lake bed to discourage new growth.

The result is a cleaner, sandier bottom in the area you use most—great for swimming, wading, and shoreline enjoyment.

The WeedRoller easily attaches to most docks. Adjustable limit switches automatically stop and reverse the unit at the point you set, so it covers the exact area you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

Regulations vary by state and can also change at the local level. For the most accurate guidance, check your local Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or equivalent agency.

A standard unit typically includes:

  • Power head
  • Universal dock hardware
  • Power converter
  • 6-foot main power cord (to converter)
  • 70-foot cord from converter to the power head (included with the 28V WeedRoller)
  • 21 feet of rollers

Rollers include flexible couplers at the head and between the 7-foot and 14-foot lengths to help contour to lake-bottom variations. Standard hardware mounts to docks with support legs up to 2 inches in diameter (square or round). Units are commonly packaged in three boxes and can ship via UPS.

The WeedRoller moves at a slow, steady pace—approximately 5 miles per hour.

  • Power head: Aluminum
  • Roller tubes: 6-inch diameter aluminum
  • Roller couplers: Rubber

The 28-volt WeedRoller uses standard 110-volt household current and converts it to a safer 28-volt AC current over the dock and water.

The power converter converts 110V AC to 28V AC. For safety, it should be plugged into a GFCI outlet and remain on land (not over the water). The power converter comes standard with the 28V WeedRoller.

The rollers are designed to fill with water. After they fill, it’s best to plug the holes. Plastic plugs are provided to help prevent sand and mud from accumulating inside the tubes.

Tip: Start with the last tube about half full of air for the first few revolutions to help ensure it doesn’t burrow down. Boat World also offers additional WeedRoller tubes.

The WeedRoller can be installed in up to 4.5 feet of water at the drive head. Depth can be increased with kits in 2.5-foot increments (up to two kits).

The WeedRoller can roll over smaller rocks and objects. The automatic reverser feature senses heavy weeds and muck conditions and reverses rotation to reduce the chance of getting stuck. After six reversals, the unit shuts down.

The WeedRoller is designed with adjustable joints to accommodate typical lake-bottom contours and slope changes.

The WeedRoller is designed to attach to a dock using the included universal dock hardware. If you have a unique setup or need help choosing the right mounting approach, call Boat World for guidance.
